"They stayed together and that was the key that allowed them to live through this experience. You don’t see that that often in search and rescue," said Paul Burke, search-and-rescue coordinator for the state. "They did some pretty inventive things, heating up rocks and things. Staying together, that was a big deal."The 6 survivors consisted of a man and his girlfriend, their 2 children, and the woman's niece and nephew. The children were aged 3 to 10. I'd like to know what the man and woman thought and talked about and how the children responded. I await a new episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive."

"The world's deadliest spiders have been found on a bunch of bananas bought in a British supermarket."
"A family from London was forced to flee its home after discovering dozens of the poisonous Brazilian Wandering critters crawling over the fruit."
"I got halfway through the banana when I saw something white on the skin. I thought it was mold, but when I had a closer look I saw some funny looking spots... I had a closer look and was horrified to see they were spiders. They were hatching out on the table, scurrying around my carpet. I was so scared I cried"....
"An NYU student believed missing was actually trapped for up to 36 hours in a tiny gap between his dorm building and a neighboring structure..."
"... and was rescued only after his worried pals raised the alarm and rescue workers heard his moans."
A pal said he last saw [Asher] Vongtau early Saturday, after his friend left his dorm room. “I don’t want to elaborate on what we were doing in there"...
Cops said they believe Vongtau somehow fell into the gap, which fire officials said was six to 18 inches wide. It was not clear how far he fell. The dorm building is 18 stories high and the victim lives on the fifth floor.

"72-year-old man survives 19 days, eating lizards, squirrels."
"He still had his hunting rifle, but... he didn't have the strength to hunt a deer... Instead, [Gene] Penaflor focused on small game, foraged for algae in a stream and drank water from a creek. To stay dry, he crouched under a fallen tree, and to keep warm, he made a fire and packed dry leaves and grass around his body."
He was in Mendocino National Forest, where temperatures dropped into the 20s and it snowed several times.

"Spain arrest over baby trapped in the drains."
"The two-day-old baby boy - who still had his umbilical cord attached - was found wrapped in plastic bags in the manhole in the building's courtyard."
There must be many babies in drains that are not discovered.
The baby was found after a neighbour had heard what he thought was a meowing cat trapped in the drains and decided to alert firefighters....That's in Spain. You remember a recent story of a baby rescued from a drain in China.

Watch for the moment when the bear decides You know what, I don't want to be in your stupid iPhone viral video.
Hit pause or mute at 1:40 if you don't want to hear the man say "holy shit."
Congressman chokes on popcorn.

Highlights of that video: a brief appearance from George Bush (giving advice) and the Congressman, Ted Poe, saying "I'm just glad I didn't throw up on anybody."

"A man doing yard work in Burnett County in northwestern Wisconsin was mauled by a black bear..."
So do we need to start worrying about bears? In Wisconsin?
Here's a poll (where you need to assume you have a dog):
The incident on Monday night started when Brown's dog tangled with the bear. Brown tried to intervene and was mauled.I can't imagine getting into a dog-bear melee. There was a similar story a month ago that also began with a bear and a dog and the dog's man getting involved. That was the one where the man's wife came to the rescue with a shotgun and hit the bear with the gun, which she didn't know how to load.
Here's a poll (where you need to assume you have a dog):
"Okene likely holds the new record for most time spent trapped underwater."
"As the ship settled on the ocean floor, the water stopped rising."
For the next 60 hours, [Harrison] Okene—who was without food, water, or light—listened to the sounds of ocean creatures scavenging through the ship on his dead crewmates....
Okene’s salvation—the air bubble—was trapped because the overturned boat acted as a sort of diving bell....
Humans require 10 cubic meters of air per day. So for Okene to continue breathing for 60 hours, he needed 25 cubic meters of air.... But Okene was breathing at 100 feet, or 30 meters, below the surface of the water. For every 10 meters a person descends, one atmosphere of pressure is added....

"Mother of the Chinese baby flushed down the toilet says she was abandoned by the boy's father..."
"... after their one night stand and could not afford an abortion."
This case is getting a lot of attention because of the vivid details seen in photographs, but realize that it's the seen part of something much larger and mostly unseen:
This case is getting a lot of attention because of the vivid details seen in photographs, but realize that it's the seen part of something much larger and mostly unseen:
There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned often shortly after birth, a problem attributed variously to young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society which puts greater value on boys or China’s strict family planning rules.

"Boruch Spiegel, one of the last surviving fighters of the Warsaw ghetto uprising of 1943..."
"... in which a vastly outgunned band of 750 young Jews held off German soldiers for more than a month with crude arms and Molotov cocktails, died on May 9 in Montreal. He was 93."
“We didn’t have enough weapons, we didn’t have enough bullets,” Mr. Spiegel once told an interviewer. “It was like fighting a well-equipped army with firecrackers."....

The bear "took my dog and then it came back to kill me. It had death in its eyes."
"This beast was thirsty for blood. This beast wanted to destroy... I figured my best chance was to run outside by the street so that someone could find me... He had four paws on top of me…he peeled my forehead skin to the back of my head off... Then, he turned me over and tried to bite my stomach and hips. That gave me just a few seconds to curl into a ball and protect my head, which exposed my arm pits and shoulder blades... It doesn’t feel anything. It is a merciless creature... By that time I could feel my body become lifeless... Out of nowhere I heard a horn and these two angles [sic] saved my life..."
Nothing would stop the merciless beast... except a car horn.

Woman found alive after 17 days in the wreckage...
... of the building that collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
On Friday afternoon, as soldiers cleared a floor, they heard sounds below, correspondents say. Officers immediately ordered workers to stop clearing the site. She had no serious injuries, but how did she keep from dying of thirst? Are we to understand that they hosed the immense pile of rubble and bodies — 1,000+ people died — and she drank the water dripped through to the place where she was enclosed? Astounding!
Detection equipment was sent in and they saw a woman waving her hand. She shouted "I'm still here" and said her name was Reshma....
Rescuers said it was possible that the woman survived because of the large quantities of oxygen and water that were pumped into the ruins in the early stages of the rescue effort.
